Haere mai ki te akoranga tino rawe o te ruma rua tekau.
Welcome to the super learning of room 20.
On July the 4th Maori language week began.
We had an amazing assembly Monday morning to celebrate the beginning of Maori language week.
the school had Herb come and talk to us about how the taiaha was used and listened to a Maori legend relating to the taiaha. We then got a demonstration on how the taiaha is used!

Homai te pakipaki for Herb!!

In class our girls were practising with the poi while our boys were outside as young warriors learning the taiaha movements!

Ka pai

What an awesome week.
Kia pai to ra.
Have a good day!

Room 20 is very excited because they have been painting tiles for a competition.
Hunters Plaza has asked primary schools in our area to paint tiles that represent our community. Room 20 and Room 7 were very keen to be part of this project. We decided to paint beautiful patterns inspired by our cultures. The tiles will be displayed at the Hunters Plaza very soon!!
Look at our beautiful tiles!

Talofa Lava

Hello.............          Catch up time!!
Room 20 has been so busy this term!!
Whats been happening??
Learning Pathway topic is SAVE OUR PLANET
Here are some questions we had to think about.
What can we recycle? How do we recycle? Why is it important to recycle?
To begin out topic we collected all our rubbish from the middle school for a week.
Here is Wayne with all our rubbish from one week!

The rubbish weighed 12 kg. Not as heavy as Manahuia but just about as high!!

I hope we can improve our recycling habits by the end of the term!!
Middle school had an interesting trip to the Visy Recycling Centre. We learnt so much about recycling and have learnt what happens to our recycling rubbish!

Here is an excellent report written by Nevaeah about the Visy Recycling Centre.
Room 20 writer of the week!
Report Writing:                  Written By Nevaeah  8 years old
Visy The Recycling Centre
Visy is a company in Auckland in Onehunga. Some Visy companies are in Australia.  Visy recycling centres are also around the world. The Visy Company recycle different types of rubbish.
The Visy recycling centre recycles rubbish such as plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminium and glass.
Visy recycles like this. The truck comes and picks up your rubbish and other peoples rubbish as well and then they go back to Visy and dump it in the pit. After they drop it in the pit some other Visy workers come and pick up the rubbish and take it inside to turn them into bales. When the Visy people take them inside the rubbish goes on the revolving belt and sorters sort them out. Once the rubbish goes on the revolving belt the rubbish goes into different machines like the magnet that picks up the cans and the air that picks up the paper and cardboard that goes up and gets turned into bales.
The Visy people can’t recycle things like plastic bags, light bulbs, mirrors, nappies and lots of other things that are dirty. The reason they can’t do this is because it might break down their machines.
Visy is a wonderful, amazing recycling company because I like how they use their machines to recycle rubbish and how they are helping us save our planet.

Awesome report Nevaeah!!

This term we have read and studied the book

 The Lorax          By Dr Seuss

This story has taught us an important message about looking after our environment.
Take a look at our amazing mural about The Lorax.

In room 20 we are very lucky to have children playing in Systema.
Here are three clever musicians playing their violins.

On the 30th of May we had Samoan Language Week.
We had a special week with Samoan dance and singing and lots of fun and games.

Room 20 made Siapo-tapa cloth. One of the oldest Samoan cultural art forms.
We studied the meaning about some of the symbols Samoans use on their tapa cloth. We used them to create our own class tapa cloth using paper ,vivid and brown dye.
